Munchausen

Named after a German soldier famous for his exaggerated tales, a Munchausen Syndrome is a “predominantly female disorder in which an emotionally immature person with narcissistic tendencies, low self-esteem and a fragile ego has an overwhelming need to draw attention to herself and to be the centre of attention.” This attention is achieved by “capitalising on, exploiting, exaggerating or feigning illness or injury or personal misfortune” and it is “more more common than the statistics suggest”.

“Here is described a common syndrome which most doctors have seen, but about which little has been written. Like the famous Baron von Munchausen, the persons affected have always travelled widely; and their stories, like those attributed to him, are both dramatic and untruthful. Accordingly the syndrome is respectfully dedicated to the Baron, and named after him.”  (British Medical Journal)
